5 Things Every Woman in Perimenopause Needs to Know
Perimenopause can feel like your body got a software update you didn’t ask for. Things that used to work just stop working. And nobody really explains what’s happening or what to do about it.
Here are five things I wish every woman knew before she hit this stage.
1. It Can Start Earlier Than You Think
Most women think menopause starts in their 50s. And it does. But perimenopause (the transition leading up to it) can start in your late 30s or early 40s. That’s when symptoms like irregular periods, sleep problems, mood shifts, and fatigue can show up.
If you’re in your 40s and something feels off, perimenopause might be why.
2. Your Symptoms Are Real (Even If Your Labs Look Normal)
This is the one that frustrates women the most. You go to the doctor feeling awful. They run blood work. Everything comes back “normal.” And you leave feeling dismissed.
Standard labs don’t always catch what’s happening during perimenopause. Hormones fluctuate wildly during this stage, so a single blood draw might miss the bigger picture. Functional testing can fill in those gaps.
3. Minerals Matter More Than You Realize
During perimenopause, your body burns through minerals faster. Magnesium, zinc, sodium, potassium: these are the minerals that support your energy, mood, sleep, and stress response. When they’re depleted, everything feels harder.
This is one reason I recommend HTMA for women in this stage. It shows your mineral patterns over time and helps you replenish what your body actually needs.
4. Gut Health Affects Everything
Your gut is connected to your hormones, your immune system, your mood, and your energy. If your gut isn’t working well, everything else suffers.
Bloating, food reactions, constipation, and even anxiety can all tie back to gut function. And your gut health can shift during perimenopause because of changing hormone levels.
5. You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
This is the most important one. You don’t have to Google your symptoms at 2 a.m. and hope for the best. You don’t have to try 15 supplements and hope one works. And you definitely don’t have to accept “this is just part of aging” as an answer.
There are tools and tests that can give you real information about what’s happening in your body. And there are practitioners (like me) who specialize in helping women navigate this stage with clarity and support.
