If you’re still using traditional fabric softeners, you might be surprised to learn that they often contain chemicals that mimic the scents they advertise. How about switching to an all-natural, cost-effective alternative? Making your own wool dryer balls infused with essential oils is a simple way to get that pleasant aroma and softness naturally. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but they also can be used for years to come!

What You’ll Need:

  • 100 percent wool yarn or other 100 percent animal yarn
  • Pantyhose (Tip: Use pantyhose with runs for an upcycling idea!)

Step-By-Step Guide:

Step 1: Create the Yarn Balls

  1. Wrap the yarn around your middle and index finger 10 times.
  2. Remove the loop from your fingers, and wrap the yarn around the center 2–3 times, creating a bow shape.
  3. Continue wrapping the yarn tightly around this core, molding it into a round shape.
  4. Once the ball reaches roughly the size of a tennis ball, cut the yarn and tuck the loose ends into the ball.
Repeat these steps until you have at least four yarn balls.

Step 2: Secure the Balls in Pantyhose

  1. Cut off one leg of the pantyhose.
  2. Insert one yarn ball into the bottom of the cut leg.
  3. Tie a knot right above the ball to secure it in place.
  4. Repeat the process for all yarn balls.

Step 3: Felt the Balls

  1. Place the secured pantyhose in the washing machine, preferably with a load of laundry.
  2. Wash on the hottest setting. The hot water will help the yarn to felt.
  3. After washing, place them in the dryer at the highest heat setting until fully dry.

Step 4: Scent with Essential Oils

  1. Once the balls are dry, remove them from the pantyhose.
  2. Add 2–3 drops of your favorite doTERRA essential oils like Lavender, Lemon, or Bergamot to each ball.
  3. Toss them in the dryer with your laundry and enjoy soft, aromatic clothing!

Editor’s Tips:

  • 2–3 drops of essential oil per ball should last for a few loads. Feel free to add more for a stronger scent.

Fun Laundry Tips:

  • Combat static cling by tossing a ball of aluminum foil into the dryer.
  • For an extra burst of fragrance, add a few drops of essential oils to a washcloth and include it in the dryer.
  • Add a few drops of Lemon essential oil to the wash cycle for grease and oil stain removal.

Making your own wool dryer balls is a fun, simple, and eco-friendly way to make your laundry smell great naturally. They’re reusable, free of toxins, and can be scented with your favorite doTERRA essential oils. So why not give it a try?
